Australian Urban Systems

Australian Urban Systems was established in June 2005 as an "Industry Cluster" under the auspices of the State Government of Victoria, Department of Industry, Innovation and Regional Development. It began as a partnership between three founding members:

• Urbis JHD
• Design Inc
• Lab architecture studio

and has now expanded to more than twenty firms across a wide range of firms involved in urbanisation issues including planning and urban design architecture; landscape architecture; engmeermg; development economics and more.
AUS also includes links to the Australian Government Departments and leading universities.

The AUS Concept

AUS is committed to a practical approach to sustainability drawn from the Victoria/ Melbourne experience.
This suggests a balance across Economic, Social, and Environmental goals. It applies an integrated approach to achieve a liveable and sustainable lifestyle with urban centers, designs to support the emerging knowledge based industries.
AUS research and experience shows that by starting with Liveabihty and Lifestyle factors, a healthy and sustainable economy is more likely to be achieved, allowing increased investment in sustainable technology to follow.

AUS in action

The AUS initiative is under the umbrella of the cooperation agreement between Jiangsu Province China and the State Government of Victoria, Australia. This cooperation has been formally in place for more than 25 years. AUS now completed two research by design projects to demonstrate the value of the AUS approach for the broader Nanjing to Shanghai growth corridor.

The Xianlin Project examined the Qi'lin district of the new university precinct of Nanjing. It provided a framework plan for a new liveable mixed use centre and design for a dynamic economic dnver for the new suburb.

The Zhenjiang project examined the relationship of this ancient and important city to its waterfront, and applied lessons from Melbourne's Docklands and Southbank projects to help Zhenjiang achieve a leap forward in both liveability and sustamability.

MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER FOR INNOVATION

It gives me great pleasure to be involved with this Australian Urban Systems / Liveability Mission and to lead this elite group of innovative planners, architects, designers and technologists from the State of Victoria, Australia.
Each of them has been invited to participate in this Mission because they have something unique to offer.

They continue to play a significant role in the architectural renaissance of Melbourne and to enhance its reputation as a global 'design-centre' and one of the World's most liveable cities.

Liveability attracts creative and innovative people to a city and in turn, creative and innovative people attract high-value industries. This is why liveability is such an important social, environmental and economic indicator for the long-term well being and prosperity of a city.

I strongly recommend that you take the time to read through this directory and to meet with the companies participating in this important Mission. I am very confident that you will be impressed by their level of expertise and global experience and by the vast range of senvices, technologies and products that they can provide.

I encourage you to discuss your specific needs with the mission delegates and I am certain that by working together, that we will be able to satisfy and address all the critical issues related to the sustainable development of our cities.
